What to Do if Attacked by Fire Ants

Know the Symptoms
  • Difficulty breathing (allergic reaction)
  • Swelling in the throat (allergic reaction)
  • Swelling/redness around the site of bite
  • Pain/itching at the site of bite
  • Irritation in the eyes, ears, nose, or throat
  • Home Care Emergency Care
    Place ice, wrapped in a washcloth or other suitable covering, on the site of the bites.
    • Leave on for 10 minutes and then off for 10 minutes
    • Repeat this process
    • If the patient has circulatory problems, decrease the time to prevent possible damage to the skin
    Those who know they have an allergic reaction to insect bites and stings should carry a bee sting kit, which requires a prescription, and become familiar with its use.

    Patients not allergic to Fire Ants should have a reversal of symptoms in a few hours to a few days.
    Call local poison control center or a hospital emergency room immediately for guidance. A hospital visit might be necessary if the reaction is severe. Before calling for help determine the following information:
    • The patient's age, weight, and condition
    • Identification of the insect to confirm it is a Fire Ant
    • The time when the bite occurred
    Some or all of the following procedures may be performed upon receiving emergency treatment:
    • Prescribed medication given by injection or orally
    • Airway establish and maintain if needed
    • Symptoms treated
    The sooner appropriate treatment is implemented, the more likely the outcome is positive.
