| Appearance of mounds in
warm and sunny locations, especially on sandy soils.
|
Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| “Chewing” damage on grass
blades, young grass plants appear ragged, or are chewed off at the
crown level. Large green excrement pellets (frass) on turf surface.
Small holes in soil where the pests are burrowing. All vegetation
bordering the burrows of cutworms will be missing because the larvae
cut nearby grass blades and drag them inside for food. |
Look for starlings or other
birds that frequent an area and leave probing holes in turf. Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| The presence of worm-like
creatures with many legs. |
Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| Pests are mostly encountered
in areas that are heavily wooded, or which have large amounts of
shrubs, or on lawns close to wooded areas or shrubs. |
Check for chiggers by using
a small, dark piece of cardboard. Place the cardboard on the ground,
standing upright on its edge, and check for very tiny, oval, yellowish
or bright orange mites that rapidly crawl from the bottom of the
cardboard to the top. Mow areas that have tall grasses or weeds.
Apply insect repellents to your clothes and body. Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| Adults cockroaches range
from 1/2” to 1” long with light brown to tan except for two dark
stripes/bars/ streaks on the pronotal shield. Infestation is generally in winter
when insects move inside homes for warmth though any openings available
(under doors, sewer connections, utility pipes, air ducts, etc.).
Damage is not common in homes.
|
Seal exterior doors with
weather stripping. Fill gaps in walls and floors where pipes enter
using steel wool and/or caulking compounds. AApply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| The presence of brown to
black insects that chirp during the night from summer through late
fall. |
Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| To check for ticks: slowly
drag a one-square-yard piece of white cloth across area. Drag cloth for 15 to 30 second then stop to examine for ticks.
|
Control larvae life stages
of these pests during late spring or early summer by applying Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label Refer to the conversion table for
various formulations. Make applications to the entire lawn as well
as ornamental beds and perimeter areas such as fence rows and wooded
areas. An additional application in the late summer or fall can
provide added control of adult ticks. |
| The presence of tiny, jumping
pests on pets’ fur. Bites on the lower extremities of humans. |
Place a piece of white paper
or cloth beneath your pet and groom the animal carefully. Tiny dark
specs (flea feces) that turn reddish brown when dampened are the
tell-tale signs of a flea infestation. Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| Appearance of mounds in
warm and sunny locations, especially on sandy soils. Turf around mounds become
thin and unsightly. Painful bites on the lower extremities of humans.
|
Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| Tiny, wedge-shaped bugs
which can be found feeding on the underside of leaves. These pests
jump or fly when disturbed, and at times can be observed running
sideways. Affected leaves wilt and have mottled, whitish, reddish
or yellow appearance as a result of sap loss from insects feeding.
Stems may also be affected. |
Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |

| Small, irregular, yellow
or brown patches ofturfgrass with a ragged appearance. These areas expand quickly,
with grass plants soon dying as insect feeding continues. Chewing damage on grass blades, especially in sunny locations. Green excrement pellets (frass), and silken tunnels in thatch.
|
Carefully examine turf for
the presence of silken tunnels in thatch. Adult moths can be observed
at night because they are attracted to lights. They can be flushed
from their hiding places during the day as the grass around them
is moved or disturbed. Look for birds probing in turf for succulent
worms. Note: birds may be looking for other pests. Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| An arachnid having a flat,
narrow body, two lobsterlike claws, eight legs, and a segmented
abdominal body, terminating with a venomous stinger, which is supplied
by a pair of poison glands. The tail curves upward and forward over
the back. Scorpions are usually brown in color and range from 1”
to 8” in length. Found in warm and dry tropical regions, including
the southwest U.S. |
Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| Silverfish have a flat,
elongated body 1/3” to 3/4” in length and broad near the head, tapering
toward the rear-somewhat “carrot” shaped. These fragile, wingless
insects are covered with scales and have two long, slender antennae
at the head and their long appendages at the rear. The silverfish
lives and develops in dark, damp, and cool areas, often in the basement,
bathroom, and kitchen. |
Sanitation is important
but not entirely effective in reducing populations because silverfish
often reside between wall partitions. Repair any moisture leaks
in plumbing, reduce available water and moisture and reduce humidity
with dehumidifiers and fans. Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| Insects are usually found
hiding underneath mulch or plant litter in ornamental plant beds,
or around building perimeters. |
Clear rocks, leaf litter
and excess vegetation, especially in areas that remain damp. Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| Ticks are most often found
in tall grasses, weeds and other overgrown, wooded or bushy areas. |
Wear protective clothing
such as long pants and socks. Apply insect repellents to shoes and
socks. Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. |
| Look for presence of wasp
nests and flying bugs. |
Apply Sevin® brand carbaryl insecticide at the rate indicated on the product label. Note: Sevin is not a fast knock-down
insecticide for wasps. |
